We brought this strange little stick in a pot of dirt home and planted it in the corner of our vegetable garden. We got a few berries from it at the end of summer and considered our first foray into personal berry farming a great success!
Something we didn't know about raspberries is how adamant they are about spreading. Once they have a root in the ground that root spouts lots of shoots and each shoot grows into another raspberry bush. What started as a sad little stick has taken over!
This is just today's harvest - one lonely blackberry made it in there since we have blackberry bushes too!
Once we pick the berries they are frozen in a container and then bagged for the big freezer in the basement. This little tip comes from Ina Garten - if you freeze your berries in a single layer before bagging them they wont stick together in a big clump!
Sometime this fall/winter I will create something scrumptious with these berries - a pie maybe, or a fool. I was given an ice cream maker so I might just give it a whirl and make some raspberry ice cream!
Have a fabulous day!

How cool!!!! I would love to be able to grow my own berries, I just adore raspberries in any way/shape/or form!
Inspirational! if you can grow those up north, I should be able to in NJ, right?
thanks for the tip regarding candles, i'm going to try the partylights!
Oohhh those look good! Yummy!
I love raspberries! We had lots of them when I grew up, and I just could never get enough of them!!! I am very jealous...
Oh yum! I just paid $4.99 for a little package of them! I think I will purchase a plant (for less money, hahah!)
How FUN! I'm thinking something like raspberry shortcake with whipped cream or even really good vanilla ice cream!
I love raspberries ~ we use to pick them right from my grandmothers bush and eat them by the handful. I think we *need* to plant one in our yard since I don't care to pay the high prices at the market.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!
Yes it is VERY nice to have so many pounds of raspberries stocking the freezer - I couldnt imagine how much it would cost to buy them at the grocery store or market - considering I paid $5.00 for the plant I think it has certainly paid for itself! I predict I will have about $200.00 worth of raspberries by the time they are all ripe and picked (based on grocery store prices.).
YUM... I would love to have a ton of raspberries! Maybe I should get a raspberry plant.
I love raspberries!!! My favorite fruit salad is just a mixture of berries. And your garden definitely "kick's ass". XOXO
