My Brownie Uniform

After reading about Madras&Pearls' post on her Brownie uniform which raised the question...is a Brownie uniform preppy?  I started thinking about my childhood pastime...earning badges.  Yes, I was a keener and set out to have more than anyone else in the history of Brownies and I was convinced Baroness Baden-Powell would come and give me a new badge she made just for me.  I had a rich fantasy life as a child!

The Brownie Law

1. A Brownie obeys and respects her elders.
2. A Brownie thinks of others before herself.
3. A Brownie tells the truth.
4. A Brownie is neat and tidy.
5. A Brownie is thrifty.
6. A Brownie plays and works cheerfully.

We should all live by these rules!

This is what my uniform looked like.  It is important to note I have a closet full of shirt dresses that look almost identical in every colour imaginable, for summer and winter.  I have to say I think my Brownie uniform was preppy!  My arms had two orange stripes as I was a Sixer and had two gold bars.  I cant remember if my six was named the Pixies or the Sprites but apparently I made a good leader as girls I don't even remember will send me messages on Facebook saying they remember I was their Sixer.

No, this isnt me but this is exactly what my uniform looked like!  It is from a blog about the death of Guiding in Canada.  We learned how to tie the perfect scarf knot in Brownies, left over right and under, right over left and under.  It's a reef/square knot, very handy in lots of circumstances.

I remember when I first joined I was so excited - we were not allowed to be Brownies until we passed a test, I googled and found we were called Tweenies but that name doesnt ring a bell for me, I will have to ask my mom if we were called something else.  We had to learn the basics and then we had a lovely little ceremony around the toadstool and we were called up in front of our families to be Brownies.  I remember the lights were dimmed and we had a little fake fire we sat around for the ceremony.  At the end of the ceremony we were taken by a Sixer to join our new group.  I get warm fuzzies just thinking about it!

Oh...and the cookies.  You know I was hell bent on selling more cookies than anyone else and I would march up and down my street in my Brownie uniform going door too door selling those cookies like nobody's business!  No,  I didnt care that I might've been infringing on another Brownie's 'turf'.  Maybe they should've been up and at 'em at 9am on Saturday morning to get the job done!

When my years as a Brownie were done I made my wings out of wire hangers, a pair of nylons and some glitter and had my 'flying up' ceremony and moved on to Guides.  I had no interest in going to Guides but I put in a couple of years before I couldn't stand to do it anymore.  If I could've stayed in Brownies I might still be there!  The uniform might be a bit short but just think of the hundreds of badges I would have by now!  The Broken Heart badge, The Driving badge, The Mixing Martinis (casually called the Vermouth badge) badge, The Marriage badge, The Mortgage badge, The Childbirth badge...and so many more!  I would need more arms!

Have a fabulous day!

wow! you are right. this so brings back memories. I wish my mom was here so she could tell me where she put my uniforms. I did brownies, girl scouts and cadets. I too like you had to have all the badges. My poor mom did so much baking, first aide, and of course selling cookies. Those were the days. I think I must go to dad's and try to find my stuff! thanks for the trip down memory lane

This is so sweet, my "Brownie career" was very short lived, but my sister went on to be a model Brownie so this brings back fond memories of her parading around in her signature Brownie dress. So neat!

I vaguely remember my days as a Brownie. I switched schools and troops as soon as I joined. Now Girl Scouts, I have fond memories of. I, too, was crazy about earning badges.

A rush of memories just came a flooding back! Being a brownie was the best! I remember being so proud to wear my uniform and display all of the badges I earned on my sash ... sweet childhood memories :)

I wasn't a Brownie; I was a CGIT girl (Canadian Girls in Training --- or Cutest Girls in Town, as we liked to think of ourselves). So, I didn't get a chance to collect badges.

But I love the idea of new badges! I have all the badges you have as well as a few more (that perhaps you haven't mentioned): the stretch mark badge, the credit card badge, the thrifting badge.

Wow! What a trip down memory lane! Although, it does make me wonder what happened to all my uniforms, badges, awards, etc. I started out as a Daisy and ended as a Cadette. We moved and I did not want to join a new troop.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories this post evoked!

This brings back lots of memories for me too. I was a Brownie, but our US Brownies had different uniforms. I have a photo of mine somewhere...I'll dig it up soon and email it to you. I became a Girl Scout in later years - quit when I was about 13.
Your Brownie uniform is not only preppy looking but kinda chic too!

My daughter is a brownie but her uniform isn't that snazzy! She does love it though. We just got back from Spring Camporee and her favorite things were rock climbing and archery. Canoing was third. It's a positive and empowering thing.

I always wanted to be a Brownie! They seemed like the perfect little organization for young girls - taught important values and provided an opportunity for socializing. I still regret not joining when I was young. And I think the uniform is classic!

I too was a Brownie ... my pack was the Sprites.

Here we are the Spritely Sprites, brave and like the knights.

I remember the oath too ...

I promise on my honour, to do my best, to do my duty God, the Queen and my country. To help other people everyday, especially those at home.

It's scary the stuff I remember almost 40 years later!

Great post! This brought back so many memories of when I was a brownie! I wasn't able to "fly up" to girl guides,,,I walked! (because I started brownies later and only did 2 years) But I do recall being a tweenie!

I had so many badges too,,,my drive to earn more was ridiculous! I really enjoyed girl guides too, but only did 2 years of it as my leader was pretty crummy the second year. BUT i have great memories!

Teena, I grew up in Don Mills and was a Spritely Sprite myself. We then moved to New York where I became a Girl Scout. I am now my daughter's Girl Scout leader. What great memories!!
